Introduction
Since the 1950’s AI researchers and scientists have been working towards a common goal of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI); a machine that can think like a human and mimic human behaviours. There has been a developing narrative for many decades that AI could and can replace human beings which has caused panic and disruption in many industries; especially since the great rise of LLMs. As such, In recent years, many organisations around the world are developing AI systems and products to automate what a human being would ordinarily do on a day-to-day basis to boost efficiency, reduce costs and increase profits.
AI is a generational technology. Surely, it is a waste to use it solely for replacing what a human being can already do? This seems to be a goal that is lacking in creativity, ambition and morals. We need a mindset shift from AI for efficiency to AI for new value that extends human capabilities and gives us new innovative ways to solve problems. We need AI products and systems that work for us. We need products and systems that are safe, reliable and trustworthy. We need to employ Human-centered thinking to develop such products and systems that are far more commercially successful than existing non-HCAI and non-AI solutions, give us abilities not possible before and leverage AI to improve the lives of human beings.
The aim of this guide is to help you, your team and organisation to adopt human-centered thinking with real practical principles, patterns, and methods you can implement to start developing better AI products and systems that are safe, reliable and trustworthy.
