Patterns / Understandable & Transparent
Surface AI uncertainty visibly and consistently. A 60% confident output should never be presented identically to a 99% confident one. Use language, visual weight, or explicit probability scores to communicate this distinction.
Show people why the AI reached a conclusion, not just what it concluded. Ideally this should happen in real-time to give the human ability to act. Tracing the reasoning path is especially critical in regulated industries. In real time this means the step it is on, the tool it has invoked and the source it is reading.
When AI draws on source material, show it. Link to it. Do not collapse the reasoning chain into a confident-sounding summary with no traceable origin. Checking should be possible without leaving the flow.
Offer explanations calibrated to the user's context and literacy, not technical defaults. A patient and a doctor need different explanations of the same AI output.
When the AI explains the final decision, also explain what would have needed to be different for a different outcome. "You were declined. If your income had been £5k higher, you would have been approved.". This not only increases confidence in the decision but also provides context.
